We are on the beach at Saltburn fortnightly, Sunday afternoons 2-4 p.m. Anyone can join in. Count from 7 August, 21st and so on. If we are not there, it is probably because: it is raining; it's winter and its bloomin cold; we are booked somewhere else. We probably did our last beach drum of 2011 on 16 October.
We practice on the alternate Friday evenings at Hinderwell. i.e 21 Oct 2011, 4 Nov, etc... To check for details email

Rainbow Daby drew our attention to this must do event on Sept 18. We briefly discussed it at our last session at Hinderwell.We could do it as part of our usual Friday drumming night. We are required to hold the intention ‘peace TO Earth Goodwill ON Human kind’ and drum for an hour at the rate of 4 beats a second (theta rate). This sounds fast but might not be – practice may be required. There was talk of doing this on the beach with a scared fire

Announcing - The Margrove Park Gig

We have been invited to do performance & workshop at the Margrove Old School (Wildlife Trust) on Saturday 6 June .

Arrive 12:30 for lunch, which may be a freebie, maybe not. Start performance & workshop at 14:00. Event finishes at about 16:00, but we finish when we feel like it I guess?

It is African themed so we can dress up if we want. Not sure if they're providing the garb, probably not. For a reminder of the african look, see HERE and HERE. But do we want to go down this route? Discussion on the Ning starts HERE .

The African theme appears to be supporting the building of an african themed garden, and volunteers will be getting their hands dirty. I guess that includes us if we want to. The whole event seems to start in the morning about 10:00 (see Wildlife Trust site HERE )

Volkspower is happening

I originally added this to the Volkspower event entry on NING but I was not sure how many people would see it there so have put it on the NING 'blog' bit and also this blog just to make sure of maximum coverage. We have been asked to arrive for 12.30 on the Saturday 30 May at the main entrance of Redcar Rugby Club (address Green Lane Redcar TS10 3RW) and we will be in action from 1pm - 3 pm. this will be in the form of a performance (as in whitby) and audience participation workshop. We will be in a marquee - but I forgot to ask about chairs! I think if you can it would be better to bring your own to be on the safe side but I will find out before we are due to play. I am not sure who has access to the Ning and will see this so please pass the word around or direct others to this comment. If you want to stay at the whole event Peter Power (organiser) has offered a discount - weekend £15 per person or £36 per family. ring him on 07981 669451 and say you are from ee by drum. for more details see his website: www.volkspower.co.uk.

Thornborough henge

We just had what approximated to an informal gig at the Beltane festival at Thornborough Henge. What a special experience that was. First there was the rather unusual but lighthearted event: because it did not take itself too seriously, that made it all the more valuable. Then it was great to jam and dance with a laid back group of people who were up for it: we were really able to see what our real potential was. The video for some reason makes it look rather more tame than it felt!

Finally the wonderful setting amid the enormous henge. Just how big it really is I had not appreciated until I got home, because in fact there are three of them! Not so Sunny Saltburn Easter Sunday 12 April

Just a brief note about this Sunday. We didn't take any photos, but loads of passers by did, so perhaps some of these will appear on the web?

A smaller gathering than usual with Chrispy, Cowbell, Bongo Col [remind me, what is bodding?] , Drumstick, and myself Ackywoe. And the usual assortment of passers by, kids & adults.

Looked as if the weather was going to be warm, but the sun hid away for most of the afternoon, and a chilly breeze meant we had to keep drumming to keep warm.

But every cloud has a rhythmic lining , the small circle meant we could actually hear each other, and it had its high points. I developed another way to get a two-for-one percussion with a shaker. And Col's lagerphone proved versatile too, both in rhythm and in doubling as dumbells.

Scarcely a wave in sight this Sunday, but how about this for a cultural reference point?

This was my first outing for the beach do. Thanks must go to Colingo & Samba Sam for the massive effort in bringing & returning all the stuff.

Impressions: well, what better way to spend a warm Sunday afternoon, and ranking high as a family occasion. I think it must have been a lot busier than previous events, and musically a mixed bag, but that didn't matter. Some of my unpublished videos testify to a sort of "dialogue of the deaf" ( Ok, unfair to the deaf).

Hiya everyone, just had a thought... It seems that this wonderful bloggy place and the Ning are in competition with each other... Cos I think they both have really good aspects... Their main aims are to connect us together and share our love of drumming and thoughts and ideas and of course have a laugh, look at photos etc etc. Anyway what my thought was is to use this Blog as a public webby space for people who love drumming like us or are interested in joining our group. The Ning has a Blog for us to use... mebees we could tek the best of the ning blogs and put em on here? The ones we don't mind sharing with the world? Just an idea, what do people think? if anyone goes on here anymore? Is anyone reading this? Hello?

Acky was the dancer
he had the greatest moves
he'd do the soft shoe shuffle
get down and do the grove

There was a fluttie player
so soft a sound she made
the other's stopped and listened
when her instrument she played

Colingo made a lot of noise
he was really good at that
and quite often you could see him
in his back to front red hat

Now Sam well she could really drum
with her in charge things really swung
they'd all join in and have great fun

Madagascan Valiha awaiting repair

This is my Madagascan Valiha , with several broke strings. I bought this from Justin Vali himself: it was made by his family (dad I think) in Madagascar.

The strings are .5mm wires extracted from bicycle cables. I have the wire, need help - Ecky, you're the man.

The Valiha needs amplification when played in public, and of course some acoustic space among drums. Even the above video doesn't do justice to it - somewhat drowned by percusssion.

Catchup - The Zimbabwean Horsetrot of Robin Hood

Ok, so what the hell is this? Well, those who attended the drum & dance event at Fylingdale Village Hall, 15 Nov 2008, may remember this rhythm.

It's one of the infrequent examples the we have encountered of what I call 3-time, but has many names: ternary, 6/8, rapide, and the underlying beat might even be understood in conventional notation as "triplets".

It wasn't explained very fully at the time, but I've managed to piece this together. I have not been able to find dundun parts, nor any online video of it. (Volunteers required to record this!) CLICK image to see full size.

Zimababwe is of course a long way from West Africa where most of our rhythms come from. But the basic rhythm ingredients are very similar, to european ears anyway.

Hey

Thanks to everyone who helped to make our final Scarborough Drum Circle such a good larf. I must say I had a bit of a moment when I switched the lights off and closed the door for the last time.... Everything seemed to flow that evening and I felt honoured and inspired to be playing with such intuitive, enthusiastic and respectful musicians. We done good. I feel sure that we will continue coming together to play, perhaps in new places in Scarborough (sandy/grassy ones) and maybe with occasional guidance. I will do my best to get the things from the library to you soon - may be Sunday if its fine. Happy to show any one who is interested how to have fun with a didge.

A thoroughly good time was had by all, there was even a brand new member came along! Helen W has lots of great ideas for the future of Scarborough Drum Circle... eg, meeting on the beach, so although it was the last meeting in the library, the circle is unbroken and will continue spinning merrily and rhythmically... watch this space. Scarborough Library, believe it or not sells Fair Trade Didgereedoos and interesting percussion so Helen W has kindly agreed to do a bit of shopping for us, hence Colingos Didge,a percussive puppet crocodile, and an amazing hand carved duck whistle ( it'll come in handy at Staithes! ). All these items were displayed in a glass cabinate along with local craft items. Oh yes lovely food to share too... stilton, bread, hoummous, profiteroles with dip in choc sauce, bombay mix, chinese crackers and more...mmme, Ee by Yum! Thanks for having us X

Just a reminder to u all..anyone can list/post/ enter a forthcoming event/session -make sure you get the date right like I didn't for a recent beach do - someone turned up with wildly expectant child the day before..aaaagh... and direct interested folk to it as somewhere to keep up with Ee by Drum..seealso Bublet's extensive coverage of this topic last wk. Also promote it to peeps to publicise their own event or course or wotever. Kuku:

Last year we shot two of the djembe parts for Kuku, again without the benefit of Samba Sam.

Here they are

We often know them by the mnemonics "Sweet potatoe, I like potatoe" and "SuperMARKET Un-yuns"

There are of course formal dundun parts too, (though Drumstick Dave put on a good improv show there) and at least one other djembe part.

P.S. Convention used for Mnemonic above is: Large Bold = bass, SMALL CAPS= tone, and normal italics = slap.

I have just lost my bloggy virginity, woopdeedoo.
As some of you may know it will probably be the last Scarborough Drum Circle on Thursday 19th. I feel like it has run its course.... but we will still have a bit of money left so was thinking about having occassional drum parties twixt Saltburn and Scarborough...or maybe a camping weekend. If you have any ideas we will be discussing what to do on Thursday. Hope to make it to some drumming on the beach one day. Thanks for all the great stuff that you do. Have fun and see you soon.

Do you all know about the WORLDFEST at Middlesbrough ?

....it is well worth checking it out if you like world music....I've been every year so far and it is an excellant little festival...both gigs on the 22nd May at the Arc and the 23rd May at Middlesbrough Town Hall will be well worth a visit...if its your kinda thang??!!!

Hello Everyone What a great blog !!! Other half of Helen Drum here !! .
Thought id better show my face at some point and didnt want to miss out on all the blog fun .
I dont go to practise but you will find me either Babysitting , Lugging , fetching and carrying or generally making a nuisance of myself at EE BY DRUM events . Hope to join you all officially on a friday at some point in time !!.

Now then cos i love me tools and fixing stuff i wanted to take this opportunity to offer my services as repairer and fixer of anything that doesnt bang crash or wallop properly . And generally help to keep all your gear working and to get involved with the creation of new and interesting ways of getting a sound from hitting something !!. Am not an expert but have desire and ambition to be .

So dont be shy drop me a line im usually up for anything so if your djembe is damp or your cowbell clunks dont be afraid to ask .

Hi gang! This whole access thing is a delicate balance - it seems to me that by 'closing the door' to unwanted outsiders, we've also closed off access to people - not group members - who might want to join/support/contribute. At present, there's no real value to anyone except ourselves in the entry route by Googling 'ee by drum'. If that's what people want, ok, but I'm missing being able to say - to people I know and trust -" just Google in 'ee by drum'". Surely our blog can be a vehicle for up-to the minute news and contact info as well as the superb internal thingy it's becoming for us? Do we need a home page? Wd it be too much on Tricia if we were able to join people up as 'spectators' (Acky's word).. and is our current definition of an Ee by drum blogger a group member?
Aki raised the very real danger of sheer volume of blogs and comments blogging us down, but if we had a 'spectators' gallery', people could feed comments/support etc by email to their 'sponsor' i.e. the group member who invited them in, leaving our bulging mailbag for our fabulously creative/knowledgeable selves...Wotchafink gang?

2 Great Opportunities!!!

Number 1: We have been asked to close the mind, body and spirit fair at (wait for it) Whitby Pavillion (main stage)on Monday 4th May (it's a bank holiday). We will be given complimentary tickets for the event which starts on the Sunday. The organiser has said that she would like to close the ceremony at 4pm with some thank yous and meditiation and could we do the final bit from 4:40pm for 20 minutes.

Number 2: The same woman (Di, from The Healing Touch, Sandsend) has also come back to us regarding the healing retreat at Sneaton Castle (24th - 26th July). Can we do a workshop from 8pm-9pm for upto 100 people and then a performance from 915-945 on the Saturday night? She's offered £100 and concessionary tickets (£60 instead of £75) if we wanted to be a part of the whole retreat.

What are our thoughts? I said I'd get back to her at the end of the week.

These pics were taken on a balmy June Day in 2002 at Lindhead. Vicky J, who is a brilliant rhythm specialist , was leading a special day for Whitby Drummers. It would be nice to get someone like that to do a special day sometime.

The "impressionistic"effects are intended to convey the balmy hot feel of the day. (And also hides some of the shortcomings of the photos.)

AKA, Have you got a dog?: Dunno I've forgotten already.

No more. These two videos of a pair of hands illustrate two of the basic djembe parts of Kpaanlogo. They are the hands of Keith from York, who led most of the Whitby Drummers sessions. This was, I think, the very last Whitby Drummers Session, at Sleights in November 2002.

Bit short? Well last October, when Samba Sam was away, we had a go at recording all 3 djembe parts of Kpanlogo, with a little big drum work thrown in. So you can now look at this when you forget. Many of us now have this on a CD, and any Eebydrummer can have the CD if can't access the internet.

Dundun parts not included here. (We didn't know about such things then, anyway.)

Confirmed - we are playing / doing a workshop from 1pm - 3pm on Saturday 30 May for Volkspower 2009 at Redcar Rugby Club, Green Lane Redcar. We are even playing in a marquee!

Paul who is organising the event has heard loads of good things about us from the Christmas event at the Priory. If everything goes well he wants to make it a regular occurence. Travel expenses will be paid plus a donation to us. this could be a 'pre -world tour' event before we hit the road for the summer.

The precursors of Ee by drum were the Whitby & Saltburn Drummers. I just dug out one or two videos from that time.

The first is one of the last of the Saltburn sessions. Not sure what the rhythm is, some resemblance to Kpanlogo. You will notice a few familiar faces, including the late great Fif Robinson. It was lead by Simon from the Newcastel Drum Circle, (who I haven't seen since).

Some examples of traditional west african dancing: there's quite a variation of course, but there are certain common elements: elbow flaps, turns , dives, leg lift actions and so on.

DRUMMING

Finally to get back to drumming , someone has kindly u-tubed a video of a classic line-up from Mamady Keita, whose tuition DVD I'm constantly attempting to plug. 3 djembes are playing the basic parts, and one ad-libs - they more or less take it in turns. At the back the classic line-up of Dundun striking drums: Dundunba, sangban and kenkeni, which we are starting to use. The singers notch up the performance to a whole new level :

Drum nights have been a life saver to me since I moved to the coast.
Living in Port Mulgrave it was never going to be easy to make friends and working in a secondary school last year was a nightmare come true.
Having our group was the one activity that kept me sane and enabled me to meet some fab people.
It was touch and go for a while during those initial Winter months with only a handful of us turning up, I'm so glad we kept at it. Thanks gang xxx

A Peace of Pre-Porridge Positivity

This Blog has clarified that Ee by Drum are a kind, caring, fun group of people who enjoy listening to each other and contributing to the whole. Rather like drumming- you must listen always to others, being aware of the whole constantly, keeping the rhythm, creating harmony... creating World Peace*, no one dominating but sharing, swimming in a vast ocean of something special. Tuning into the universe... the Uni-Verse, the one song. A part of nature not apart. Joining in, sustaining one another, sustainable. We are One, We are Ee by Drum.

*World Peace incedentally won't be all that peaceful and quiet cos it'll have djembes and percussion playing in the background. The occasional cry of 'Have you got a dog- Woof woof woof ' from someone doing Rainbow Tai Chi. People in circles thoughly enjoying throwing numerous beach balls (large and small) filled with water and coated with mud (the beach balls that is) at each other, shrieking delightedly the persons name before throwing enthusiastically.
